Making exceptions for Ethiopia
Western policy towards Africa is ill-informed and inconsistent. That’s the message of Ethiopia’s prime minister, Meles Zenawi, in his interview in the Guardian last week. And there’s some truth in what he says. But Meles should be careful what he wishes for.(More...)

Marilaque Breakfast Ride 1-27-08 (Ride Report)
PBRC-Manila Chapter organize a breakfast ride to Marilaque for those new members who haven't gone to Marilaque yet. This was planned right after their ride to Lemery, Batangas.
Most of the rider who joined the ride came from Manila, Ram, Jay, Ross and RJ. Dexter who is from Pasig also joined the ride.
The ride was planned not only to have breakfast in Marilaque but also to raffle the two LED Taillights that was given by Sir Thunder to the group.
The meeting place is on Shell - J. Vargas at 7am. We were able to take off from shell at around 8:30am because of me being late. Hehehehehe (Sorry guys, minsan lang naman e.)
I spearheaded the group until we pass Sta. Lucia and the way where you can go to Antipolo (sorry guys, forgot the name). After that, Ram became the spearhead of the group. All riders with backride are asked to follow the spearhead followed by the single riders.
The way up to Marilaque is smooth and hassle free and the riders enjoyed ever curved and straight of the road until we are almost 3/4 to Mang Vic's Bulalohan were we are meets with drizzle. Since it's just drizzle, we continue our way until we reach Mang Vic's Bulalohan, there we waited for more or less 30minutes before we were able to have our chair.
After taking our breakfast (which I think should be considered as brunch), Archer get a cut out paper were all present in the ride asked to write their names, this is for the raffle of the LEDS LIGHT. I was given the honor to draw the name of the two winners and guess what, RAM was the first one I've drawn and followed by yours truly....heheheheheh (Talking about being lucky).
After resting and taking some pictures, the group prepares to descend from Mang Vic's and call it a day. This time I spearheaded the group again and from time to time being pass by Rj who goes way ahead of the group so that he can take a video of the group ride. (Pre, next time iba naman papakuha natin para kasama ka). As we are nearing Cogeo, the rain pour down and we have to take shelter and wait for the rain to stop, after 15mins of rest the rain stops and we continue our descend.
The group last stop was when we wait for Ram, Ross and Archer who filled their tanks. We then say goodbye to each other and headed home.
A simple but fun breakfast ride of the Group.

Ethiopia: speaking truth to power
"The ball is in your court. I only pray you be fair. You talk about 'multi-party democracy.' I believe there would never be any meaningful opposition party in this country as long as you are in power. It wouldn't exist because you make sure it wouldn't exist. So far you have been successful."

Ethiopia: JPMorgan Chase urged to reject loan for dam
JPMorgan Chase has come under pressure to refuse to provide a loan for the controversial Gilgel Gibe III hydropower dam in Ethiopia.
Three NGOs – Campagna per la Riforma della Banca Mondiale in Italy, Les Amis de la Terre in France and International Rivers in the US – have written to the US bank to urge it to refuse a $400 million commercial loan request from the Ethiopian government in connection with the project, which they say would violate the bank’s environmental policy.
The 1,870MW dam is already under construction by Italian firm Salini, at an estimated cost of €1.4 billion ($2.1 billion), and would be the third stage in a project to dam the Gilgel Gibe River for hydropower. The Italian export credit agency SACE has refused to guarantee the project.(More...)

Ethiopia: Kinijit VP Birtukan weighs in on NEB's decision
After the National Electoral Board (NEB) decided in favor of Ayele Chamiso and awarded the party’s name, ‘CUDP’ to his group, Birtukan’s group, which is forming a union with parliamentarians led by Temesgen Zewdie (MP), is considering forming a new party and obtaining a new name, Birtukan Mediksa told Capital.
“We are discussing the option of forming a new political party so that we can obtain legal status. It is one possibility but the door to further struggle to obtain our party’s name is not a dead option yet,” said Birtukan, “whatever we decide, one thing remains, we will keep the program and policies of the CUD.”(More...)
