Jimmy Carter Leads Delegation to Ethiopia, Three African Countries

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, last Tuesday started leading a delegation of senior-level Carter Center officials on an 11-day tour of Africa to call international attention to health needs among impoverished communities in Ghana, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, it was learnt.

In Ethiopia, President Carter will attend the opening meeting of the Ethiopian Public Health Training Initiative's Replication Conference in Addis Ababa. The conference, the first of its kind, will illustrate the success that the Carter Center-assisted public health training has had in helping Ethiopia meet the growing need for trained health care workers in the country.(More...)

Ethiopia requests Turkish soldiers in Somalia

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has asked the Turkish prime minister to consider Turkey's participation in a U.N. force in Somalia if the deployment of an African Union peace force fails in the troubled country.

In an interview with the Turkish Daily News during an official visit by the Ethiopian prime minister early this week, senior Turkish government officials said Turkey is not eager to send troops to Somalia. The Turkish preference is for the deployment of an African Union peace force. However, if the African Union fails to deploy peace force and in case the U.N. peacekeeping force for Somalia is established, Turkey might be obliged to consider sending troops, because Turkey and Ethiopia are Muslim countries, said the same sources. Eight killed in Mogadishu mortar attacks as Ethiopian troops raided

MOGADISHU (Agence France-Presse) - At least eight people were killed and several others wounded in mortar and grenade attacks in an escalation of guerilla-style attacks in the Somali capital, witnesses said.

Hours later, a camp housing Ethiopian troops in southern Mogadishu came under heavy fire, sparking fighting in the lawless capital, residents said. Assailants fired several mortar shells at a crowded market in the south of the city, killing three people and wounding several others, forcing many to flee the volatile area.(More...)

CNN International signs a deal with Walta Information Center

WIC has entered an agreement with CNN International to promote tourism in Ethiopia. In the upcoming weeks of transmission CNN will air programs that deal with Ethiopian Epiphany and Dire Sheikh Hussein shrine. (Source - walta)
